Abstract

This is the first report of a pruritic erythematous maculopapular dermatitis due to Euproctis (lava Bremer in Korea. Euproctis flava Bremer belongs to the order Lepidoptera which includes the butterflies and moths, and is characterized by the presence of scales on the body and wings and by the fact that the mouth parts are in the form of a coiled tube. Metamorphosis is complete, the eggs, the larval stage being typically wormlike and hairy as caterpillar, and the pupa.
The dermatitis is produced by the toxic hairs coming in contact with the skin, so that toxin in the hairs produces local pruritic erythematous maculopapuies and wheals at the area of contact. If the toxic hairs get into the clothing, widespread dermatitis with fever, headache and chilling sensation may result.
Histologic examination of biopsy revealed edema and moderate mononuclear infiltrate in the mid and upper dermis.
